Plant Based News Presents OMN!PORK

The wonderful team over at Plant Based News put on an OMN!PORK tasting event tonight at Neat Burger.

I first heard of the brand recently after seeing a clip on the news while I was in the gym of people sampling at a tech fair in Hong Kong and had being dying to try it myself.

The tasters on offer tonight were Meat x Omnipork Tacos, Neat x Omnipork kimchi sliders, Sloppy Joes and loaded chilli cheese fries.

I managed to get in early, the DJ was already in full swing and I sampled the goods before it got too busy.

I can’t decide what I loved most, the tacos, I’m a sucker for Mexican food, or the sliders but to be honest everything was delicious and there were drinks on offer too, being a vegan vamp, I went for the obvious choice, the blood orange lemonade and it was divine!

OmniPork is developed by food-tech company RightTreat, a subsidiary of Green Monday. An established food science team in Canada spent two years of comprehensive research to create this nutritionally superior pork substitute, comprised of a proprietary blend of plant-based protein from peas, non-GMO soy, shiitake mushrooms and rice for complete protein. It contains 0mg cholesterol, is antibiotic-free, hormone-free, cruelty-free, and 86% lower in saturated fat and 66% lower in calories than traditional pork, while being much higher in fiber, 260% higher in calcium and 127% higher in iron.

Since its launch, OmniPork has won support from renowned chefs around the globe. In Mainland China, OmniPork has partnered with acclaimed restaurant chains like Wagamamas, Taco Bell, and Tsui Wah. In other regions, numerous restaurant partners have launched dedicated OmniPork menus, including: Ming Court at Cordis Hotel Hong Kong, One Harbour Road at Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, Shatin 18 at Hyatt Regency Hong Kong Shatin, You & Mee at Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok and Baan Thai Family Recipe Restaurant, headed by a Michelin-starred chef. OmniPork has also launched in Singapore and Taiwan with tremendous success, with many hotels and restaurants redesigning their local dishes with OmniPork.

I’m hoping it takes off here in the UK too.

Thank you Plant Based News and Neat Burger for hosting such a fab event, I’ve very glad I braved trekking into central on a cold January evening for this!

Proceeds from the event went to Veganuary

The Spread Eagle

London’s first ever fully vegan pub opened it’s doors last year, The Spread Eagle in Homerton, East London.

There was a time when even though I’ve lived in East London since I upped sticks and moved from Norfolk to London 12 years ago, I would have considered myself more of a West end girl in regards to where I went out, the restaurants, bars and clubs I frequented and the circles I mixed in but I’m so happy that I remained living east as now it really is London’s vegan hub. From Shoreditch to Hackney, vegan restaurants are opening up almost weekly and the vegan boom is, well, booming!

The Spread Eagle is only a few minutes in an Uber for me, I could drive but the cocktail menu is just too good, they even do a black cocktail called Lavender is The New Black, perfect for a vegan vamp! I’d also recommend the Smoked Pineapple Cosmopolitan.

I’ve pretty much sampled EVERYTHING on the menu and the restaurant is run by Club Mexicana and the food, glorious, I have to say, the tofish taco’s feature probably the best tofish I’ve ever tasted, the tempeh bacon taco’s are just divine and it really is hard to decide what I like best out of the MFC (Mexican Fried Chicken) burger, the Club Mex Cheeseburger or the Sticky Ribs Burger, they’re all just too tasty and the wings and nachos are amazing too.

The best Mexican food outside of Mexico? Yes, in fact, even better because it’s all vegan!!!

Dessert wise, I love the cheesecake but it’s the chilli chocolate tart with vegan whipped cream that really tantalizes my taste buds.

If you live in london and haven’t been, you must go, it’s also dog friendly so take your pooch!
